Paul, Prince Regent of Yugoslavia
- Paul, Prince Regent of Yugoslavia
1893–1976
Paul served as Regent for King PETER II from 1934 until he was deposed on 27 March 1941 in a bloodless coup. Paul worked for Yugoslav neutrality, believing the country militarily unfit to fight the Germans. However despite Allied pressure and contrary to the sentiment of both his people and armed forces, Paul bowed to German threats and signed a secret pact with the Axis on 25 March 1941. Two days later the leader of the Yugoslav Armed Forces, SIMOVIC, put into operation plans for a military take-over and gave Peter II power to rule the country. Paul and his family left for Greece that night.
